We were recently approached by a customer who had fitted an old lock to a door on an outbuilding and had two problems. Firstly, they snapped the cheap alloy key that they had with the lock and secondly, the door they fitted it to, was of a thickness where the length of the key wasn’t long enough to pass through the thickness of the door and reach the lock. (In effect, the key needed to be longer but there were no available key blanks of such a length).
To resolve this problem for the customer, we got two short key blanks, removed the opposite end of each key and then joined the remaining keys together using a silver soldering process, to lengthen the key. Of course the key blanks used were of better quality and strength than the original to avoid the snapping that the customer experienced with the original key.
If you have any unusual requirements, or have an aspect of old fashioned locksmithing that you require, please get in touch and see if we can find the right solution for you.
Needed a longer key for a rim lock but couldn’t find one, so KDS extended the original. Fits a treat. Great result
