Save yourself a fortune – Always make sure you have at least TWO keys to your vehicle.
A large number of enquiries we get for vehicle keys are from people who have lost the last key they had to a vehicle.
This can be the very first time the public become aware that with some vehicles, you cannot simply programme a key to a vehicle when “ALL KEYS are LOST”.
In this situation, you can find that you have to pay for someone to access one of the electronic modules on the vehicle, remove it, desolder a chip, read the information, create keys to communicate with it and then re-build everything.
In some circumstances this involves removing the internal sections of the vehicle and whilst this can be just the glove box and or another panel, in some cases it is the dashboard, instrument cluster and much more that has to be removed to access the required electronic module.
On these occasions, you have only two real options when all keys are lost.
The first option is to pay to have your vehicle towed to the dealership and then the dealership will charge you for the work and this can be very expensive and slow. In addition you will have to pay the tow truck company as well.
The second option is to have a mobile locksmith arrive at the vehicle and carry out the work on site. This can save money, as often the mobile locksmith can be more competitive than the dealership and of course you are saving the cost of a tow truck.
Either option can present costs of hundreds of pounds and in worst case scenarios, a couple of thousand pounds.

Best Advice is to MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS HAVE A SPARE KEY. Creating a second key from your spare key avoids most of these awful situations and in comparison, is very cheap and saves a small fortune.
ANSWER: If you speak to you friendly locksmith and explain the situation, it is very possible that you can have a spare key made using a cheaper method than the expense of key programming via the vehicles OBD (On Board Diagnostics) and use just a fixed blade key to save costs against having a remote key.
More importantly, how would you feel if you lose that last key you have and find out that the cost of making keys when All Keys are Lost, is higher than the value of the car.
